Digital Mass Storage in Archives

ABSTRACT

Archives are currently grappling with the necessity of building huge file storage systems to manage a wide variety of media.  This presentation will provide an update on the evolution and experiences of specific archives in implementing Digital Mass Storage Systems.

SPEAKER BIOS

Lars Gaustad

Lars is Preservation Advisor at the National Library of Norway. He is currently the Chair of the Technical Committee of IASA and is involved in preservation and restoration initiatives with the Audio Engineering Society. He also teaches at the Danish School of Conservation.

Ian Gilmour

Ian is currently the Senior Manager of Preservation and Technical Services at the National Screen and Sound Archive in Australia. He is also a member of SMPTE and Chair of the AMIA Preservation Committee. Ian is in charge of the Digitizing of the Audiovisual content at Screen Sound, and works with the IT section to design and implement the Digital Mass Storage and delivery system. He has worked as an engineer and conservator at the National Library in Australia, at the Department of Defense, and is a consultant form many AV organizations around the world.

Mike Handy

Mike Handy is a senior operational manager of IT services for the Library of Congress. He has led many of the Library's critical IT projects over the past decade including: the deployment of all internal and external network services; the design and implementation of a mirrored disaster recovery site for the Library's core systems; the design and deployment of a carrier-neutral in-building wireless system; and the creation and staffing of a fifteen-member multimedia production group. He is currently providing management coordination for the design and development of IT support services for the Library's world-class state-of-the-art National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC).

Handy is a librarian by education who has also held supervisory positions in traditional library operations.
